Home Theater System Buying Guide

By: David Rahimi

In order to get a true cinematic experience while watching your favorite movies at home, not only will you need great video, you’ll also need great audio. When deciding on whether or not to get a home theater system, remember that audio is half the movie experience. Having a great sound system while watching a movie will wrap you up in the movie and will allow you to feel as if you are there.

Unfortunately, getting the right home theater system can be a bit confusing at times, especially when you try to build the perfect sound system yourself. Our product specialists usually recommend all-in-one home theater systems to our customers, which take all the confusion out of the equation. When you buy an all-in-one home theater system, all of your speakers will be “voice matched” so one will not offset the other and instead they work together giving you a better overall audio experience.

Hurricane Preparedness: Use Text On Cell Phones During And After Storm

Written by oneself on 5:42 AM

by: Asher Ricard

During Katrina, families felt frustration with the inability to get in touch with loved ones because of overused cellular networks and congestion on the lines. It left many worried and scared as they waited to hear of loved ones safety.

Cell phone companies have spent years upgrading in preparation for the next big storm. However, they are asking those who find themselves in the same situation to take some added precautions. With Gustov approaching, the cell phone companies are asking those in the path when the storm hits or after to text instead of calling. Texting uses less of the network then actual calling does. This will free up the network. I have had countless times that I have seen this with my own phone in a non-emergency situation. There have been times when I couldn’t make or receive calls, but I could text.

Sony Ericsson W890i vs. Sony Ericsson W910i

Written by oneself on 1:10 PM

By: Caroline Telford

Nothing is more difficult than trying to choose between two excellent mobile phones that both sound absolutely brilliant. Such is the case with the Sony Ericsson W890i and Sony Ericsson W910i. As both of these mobile phones from Sony Ericsson are Walkman phones, the primary focus that they share in common is that of the media player and everything that falls beneath it.

Both of these phones bear unique distinctions in their own way. For instance, the Sony Ericsson W890i is built upon the success of its predecessor, the W880i. With a few upgraded features and a lot of corrections made based on user input concerning the W880i, Sony Ericsson managed to craft into existence and mobile phone to be proud of. On the other hand, the Sony Ericsson W910i is rather different, and does not base itself on anything apart from its own two feet, figuratively speaking.

Comparing the Features of the Sony Ericsson W890i and Sony Ericsson W910i

Most visible in terms of the differences in features is the fact that, for starters, the Sony Ericsson W890i is a candy bar type phone whereas the Sony Ericsson W910i is a slider phone. Both designs have their merits and shortcomings, and appeal to various types of people depending on preference.

One thing that is affected by the difference in mobile phone type however is that of the display screen. By taking advantage of the sliding feature, the Sony Ericsson W910i is able to fit in a 2.4 inch screen of TFT LCD type with 264,144 colours. Of course, the Sony Ericsson W890i offers the same, although it is not an LCD, and is only 2 inches worth of display. Such shortcomings could be ignored; however a big screen size is a pretty big advantage.

In terms of camera quality, the Sony Ericsson W890i is a clear winner. Both models do not have autofocus, or really many camera enhancing features which is normal considering that they in the Walkman instead of Cybershot line. What the W890i does have when compared to the W910i is a 3.2 megapixel camera, against the 2.0 megapixel that the latter model sports. In terms of sheer photographic power, this represents a pretty big difference, and is not easily reconciled for any who intend to use the camera for capturing good quality images.

Finally, internal storage on the Sony Ericsson W910i is slightly better with 35 MB available as opposed to 26 MB. Both models support the Memory Stick Micro however, so a difference of 9 MB does pale in comparison to the 2 GB memory that can be added on.

Very little separates both these mobile phones really. While the W910i has the better screen and slightly more storage, the W890i has instead a much better camera. Ultimately, it may just be the type of phone, i.e. slider or candy bar, which distinguishes one from the other. As mobile media platforms however, both models offer high quality media playback that would be the biggest reason for any user to purchase a unit.

Used Computers (Desktops/Laptops)– What To Look For?

Written by oneself on 3:49 PM

Nowadays desktops and laptops are much more durable and dependable that they were just five years ago. Therefore, buying a used or refurbished computer is becoming more of a trend.

Suppliers replace their computers on average every 6 months and companies frequently upgrade their equipment. Buying one of these used or refurbished computers can save you a lot of money while still using a quite up to date technology. This is even more relevant if you are not a heavy user (i.e. most of your time on a computer is spent online, you may use a few standard applications once in a while). Even modestly priced computers will more than suffice for these types of demand.

Thinking about buying a used or refurbished desktop or laptop?

Buying a computer is not at all an easy job, one has look get detailed information of the available computers of good and reputed brands. One must take into consideration the size, color, configurations, features etc… While your computer should correspond to your personality and lifestyle, you should always keep in mind the reputation of the brand in the market. Brand counts a lot; you can render good service by the manufacturer if your computer is damaged.

Important handy Tips before buying a computer...

* Verify if the brand is reputed and always buy a good reputed brand. Read about customer service experience for that specific computer issues
* Check the warranty/guarantee of the computer (seek out computers which still have warranty/guarantee remaining)
* Compare the price of the new model in the market with what price your buying your used computer, try to get the best bargain. i.e. a two year old computer should not be bought for more than half of its original price.
* Check if the computer is outdated (if out of production it is difficult to get spare parts)
* Is the operating system current (Windows Vista/Windows Xp). Earlier versions probably run slower (windows 2000) and would not be advisable unless your needs are limited (i.e. web surfing, Word...). In any event, stay away with computers running on Windows 98 (granted you don't find many anymore). Also be aware of Windows Vista. Many users are reverting back to XP and that is even more obvious in the corporate world. Why? Vista looks nice but doesn't bring many technical improvements; therefore IT managers are not willing to implement something new when what they have works just fine. Some domestic users just don't like the new way of navigation within the Vista Operating System.
* Check if the configuration of the computer you are buying is good.
* Check the speed of the processor. If possible start the computer and see how long it takes to fully turn on. If its slow just turning on, imagine the lack of speed once you start adding software..

Additional Tips for laptops

* Is the battery life good? (search for the computers with a very good battery backup (2 hours minimum).
* Check for the screen size of the computer your buying and see to it that it is not exceeding the Normal (normally the screen size should be between 15-17). Less than that generally translates in older computers and increases the chance of age failure. Once the screen breaks, you are often better of changing the whole computer.
* Review the connectivity of the computer (Network, USB, Video, Audio…) look to it that it has a good connectivity including wireless
* Check out the weight. Ensure the computer is light enough for you to carry (light 7pounds)
* More details at www.bestlaptopsreviews.com/index.php/Used-Notebooks.html

Where to buy used computers:

* Online auctions. Pro: Often offer the best prices. Cons: Cannot validate the accuracy of the described item. No warranty. Tip 1: Some companies will offer warranty for up to two years, the cost is about 12 of the purchase price. Tip2: Buy from sellers with great feedback, do not hesitate to contact the seller with questions prior to bidding
* Online marketplaces: Pro: Set prices and quantities - Sometime warranty is available. Cons: Prices can vary a lot, do your homework
* Craiglist.com Contacting sellers on Craiglist.com in your local area gives you a chance to meet with the owner and physically test the computer before the purchase

Where to buy refurbished computers:
Refurbished computers can be a great way to buy as they have warranties and are generally sold by manufacturers or companies affiliated with them.

* Manufacturers websites will tell you how to buy directly from them or from their authorized sellers. Pros: Warranty, established companies. Cons: Prices are higher than regular auctions (you pay more for peace of mind)

Buying a used or refurbished computer can be a great way to save money. If you use some of the advice discussed above you can avoid many pitfalls. One last thing concerning laptops, make sure you have a good bag to protect your computer from a fatal accident. Your bag should be big enough for a 17 inch screen computer as it is rapidly becoming the norm, you will probably change your computer within a few years, the bag you may keep a lot longer.

Good Buy!

HTC Touch Diamond – Business or Pleasure?

Written by oneself on 7:50 AM

Nowadays, it is really easy to get in touch with the outside world no matter which part of the world it is that you are in.

With the help of Personal Digital Assistants or PDA's, mobile phones, laptop computers, multimedia players and other nifty devices, you can do your office work from almost anywhere.

This is the reason why devices which are a combination of a PDA and a mobile phone have become popular. Whether you are looking for a device which provides you with a range of business or entertainment applications, the PDA-phone devices should be perfectly suitable for you.

An Overview of the HTC Touch Diamond

HTC stands for High Tech Computer Corporation, and it is a manufacturer of portable devices based in Taiwan. The portable devices that they develop have the Microsoft Windows Mobile platform.

The HTC Touch Diamond was first released in the market June of 2008. The device is considered to be a PDA-mobile phone combination.

First up, here are the specifications of the device. The HTC Touch Diamond has:

- 2.8 inch LCD touchscreen

- 480x640 65-K color VGA TFT display

- 3.2-Megapixel CMOS color built-in camera

- 4 GB internal storage

- 192 MB RAM

- 256 MB internal flash

- 396 hours on standby

- 5.5 hours talk time

HTC Touch Diamond Review

The HTC Diamond runs using the Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional operating system. First, here is a quick look at the design of the PDA-mobile phone. The good thing about the HTC Touch Diamond is that it does not follow the trend of overly-wide PDA's.

The dimensions of the PDA-mobile phone are 4x4x0.45 inch, weighing 110 g rams. The device is handy enough. The back cover has a unique 'undulating prism' design.

The front part of the HTC Touch Diamond is made up mainly of the VGA display. Directly below it is the control buttons - which are both depressible and touch-sensitive. There is also a directional pad which doubles as a scroll wheel. All in all, the overall design of the HTC Touch Diamond can be described as "no space wasted".

An Analysis of the Features of the HTC Touch Diamond

The really great features of the HTC Touch Diamond include the following:

- YouTube application

- Opera browser

- TouchFLO 3D interface

The last item, which is the TouchFLO 3D interface, is what makes the HTC Touch Diamond a truly innovative device. You can also quickly scan the menus, and move from one option to another.

For those who are using the HTC Touch Diamond as a business device, there are nifty features like page reorientation from a browser.

You can also view web-based e-mail programs like Gmail as you would from your desktop. YouTube lovers would have a lot to praise about the HTC Touch Diamond.

The performance of the battery is average. You should not forget that the HTC Touch Diamond is also a phone. The voice quality when making calls or using the speaker phone is good. You can also use video calling and hands-free calling.

Lastly, there is a 3.2-Megapixel camera on the back of the PDA-phone which has autofocus. It does not have LED for taking pictures in the dark, though.

For the most part, the HTC Touch Diamond will work smoothly. Just watch out for the batter life and its tendency to slow down due to the TouchFLO 3D interface. Other than that, the HTC Touch Diamond is a good enough device - whether it is for business or entertainment applications.

Unlocking The Apple iPhone 3G

Written by oneself on 7:39 AM

The Apple iPhone 3G was announce in a blaze of glory that eclipsed most of the other smart phones on the market, but it remains to be seen whether Apple has really provided users with exactly what they want. Less than a year after the original iPhone went on sale Apple promises new users of the latest iPhone that they will be given the chance to officially download 3rd party applications through the App store. But how quickly will an unlocked version become available.

The Apple iPhone is an updated smart phone with GPS and a 16 GB memory. The 3G iPhone has a lot to write home about with added support, added GPS, third party applications, and support for a Microsoft Exchange server. Extra 3G support is a massive plus for the iPhone. If the trial speed of data transfer is maintained then users really will be carrying the Internet around in their pocket. At half the price and twice the speed of its forerunners the new 3G versions is sure to be popular.

The new phone is thinner at the edges than the earlier version and slightly thicker in the middle, other measurements remain the same although the 3G is 2grams lighter than its predecessor. It no longer has the recessed headphone jack, which some users found annoying, it is now flush enough for any 3.5mm headphones.

Due to go on sale July the 11th the phone will be on offer in black with 8GB of memory or in black or white with 16GB of memory. Sources suggest that the new iPhone will be available in the UK from Apple, 02 and the Carphone Warehouse.

The 8GB model will be on sale for £99 on a new £30 monthly contract or an existing £35 contract - if you choose the higher tariffs of £45 and £75 a month then you will get the 8GB iPhone free. Prices are quite a bit steeper for the 16GB version with the phone costing £159 on the £30 and £35 tariffs, £59 for the £45 tariff and free on the £75 tariff.

Users will continue to receive unlimited data whatever their tariff although they could find that they will be liable for O2's excessive use policy. On the upside however you will be able to browse over O2's HSDPA network and unlimited access to 9,500 Wi-Fi hotspots through BT Openzone and the Cloud.

Although the addition of 3G and GPS make the iPhone 2.0 attractive it is still without some of the basic features found on much cheaper phones, including multimedia messaging and voice messaging.

The first iPhone was available unlocked soon after its launch but this time it will only be available in store rather than through iTunes. So what of the grey market for iPhones and those that are eager to buy one for the discounted contract price in the hope they can get it unlocked?

Well they might be put off even faster than before. Apple have done their best to ensure that their second generation phone is locked right down. With official applications being controlled tightly by Apple, any non-legitimate contract phone will easily be spotted - or more importantly won't benefit from the full features.

Insure and Smile offers competitive mobile phone insurance for all models of mobile phones including the new Apple 3G iPhone. Insure a mobile for as little as £2.99 a month against theft, breakdown and water damage with 48 hour replacement.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y510 Review - 7 Great Reasons to Buy the IdeaPad Y510 Laptop

Written by oneself on 8:34 PM

By Kent Lee

Lenovo fans who are shopping for a well-designed, yet innovative laptop need look no further than the IdeaPad Y510. Equipped with updated styling and superb audio, graphics, and multimedia options, this IdeaPad model is a dream come true. Here are just a few of the great features that make the IdeaPad Y510 worth buying:

  1. Updated Housing Case In the past, users were dissatisfied with the way the keyboard and case always looked smudged with fingerprints. By changing the housing case to one with a rougher woven feel the problems with the fingerprints was easily solved. This new design also updated the classic style in a way that paid homage to the original.
  2. Superb Graphics What the laptop lacks in lightness, it makes up for with it's superb Intel X3100 graphics. The lack of this feature had been a problem in the past.
  3. Monster Hard Drive The included 250GB hard drive is a monster and is capable of handling the computing needs of most users. If you enjoy downloading memory hogging songs and movies, you will probably never need an extra, external hard drive!
  4. Brilliant Display The Lenovo IdeaPad Y510 has a display screen with a glossy finish that provides brilliant color. The 1280x800 pixel screen provides a nice, large view.
  5. Desktop Quality Keyboard The IdeaPad Y510 keyboard provides a wonderful, high-quality feel and an excellent touch. Missing is the horrible bounce that you find with so many other laptop brands. This provides the user with a near desktop-quality keyboard. The individual keys, themselves, have a good size and a solid, cushioned feel.
  6. Great Power Management System The 'novo' switch is another neat feature. The power management system can shift your power options between high, medium, and low with one push of a button! This really creates power savings for the battery life.
  7. Superior Sound System Included with the Y510 is a premium Dolby Home Theater audio system. The superior sound plus the 5 speakers and included subwoofer provides a theater-like sound that is absolutely amazing! It is worth driving to the nearest electronic store just to hear the quality of sound that is produced by these speakers!
A couple of the weak areas of the IdeaPad Y510 include:
  1. Increased Weight

Users will immediately notice the increased weight. The new Lenovo IdeaPad Y510 weighs in at almost 7 pounds yet is still conveniently portable.

  2. No HDMI Hookup

You will not find an HDMI hookup so you cannot connect the IdeaPad Y510 with any HDTV.

  3. Inability To Play High Level Games

Even with the increased graphics, only lower level games can be played. Lenovo is promising to resolve this problem in the near future, however.

  4. Poor Viewing Quality At Vertical Angle

The viewing quality is reduced outside of the horizontal and straight view angles. If you try to view it vertically you do not have a very good picture but how many times do you really need to do this anyway?

Laptop shoppers looking for a laptop that is well-built with a reasonably priced, a sizable hard drive, wonderful multimedia features at a great price won't be disappointed with the Lenovo IdeaPad Y510.

You already know what you want in a laptop. Get the best - the Lenovo Ideapad Y510 - at a terrific price at: http://laptopcomputerbargains.com.

First 4 Internet Sony XCP DRM Vulnerabilities

Written by oneself on 8:32 PM

Technological measures protecting works distributed on Compact Discs have been found to pose unreasonable security risks to consumers personal computers, corporate and government networks and the information infrastructure as a whole. Vulnerabilities inherent in widely distributed CD protection measures create the potential for a frightening range of abuses.

Viruses and Trojan horses are already leveraging these technologies to hide from antivirus programs and system administrators. Exacerbating the unacceptable risks posed by these technological protection measures, is that fact that the uninstallers provided to remove these measures pose additional security risks allowing a malicious web site to hijack a consumer's computer.

You have to be aware of several vulnerabilities regarding the XCP Digital Rights Management (DRM) software by First 4 Internet, which is distributed by some Sony BMG audio CDs. The XCP copy protection software uses "rootkit" technology to hide certain files from the user. This technique can pose a security threat, as malware can take advantage of the ability to hide files. We are aware of malware that is currently using this technique to hide.
