How A Custom Built PC Can Save You Money

Written by oneself on 6:29 AM

by Lee Stewart

The phrase "custom built pc" is usually assumed to mean "expensive pc." While for other products the term "custom built" may mean expensive for personal computers the opposite is usually the truth.

When purchasing a brand name computer you typically only have a few options, which means you have to pay for the features and components some corporate executive thinks you need. That can add up, especially since those corporate executives have a vested interest in selling you the more expensive of their features and components.

On top of that, you also pay for the brand. A computer emblazoned with "Sony" or "Dell" is going to cost more than the same exact computer that carries no brand label. It used to be that buying a brand name was worth the extra cost for the guaranteed quality. But nowadays there are a lot of totally competent and even outstanding computer makers that operate under their own label or no label at all.

There is no difference between buying a standard factory line PC from Dell and buying a custom built PC from an independent online computer builder, provided you do a bit of research and make sure you are buying from a reputable and trustworthy online computer builder.

Consider that many big computer makers get most of the individual components to build their branded computers from independent suppliers. An independent online computer builder can get the same components from the same suppliers and build the same computer, and then charge less for it.

And this doesn't go only for cheap desktops (which via an independent custom built pc supplier can be REALLY cheap). Cheap laptops can also be had by going the custom built pc route.

In recent years a number of small independent online computer builders have actually done such a good job of custom building laptops that they have today become successful large businesses and now produce factory line models themselves.

As quality goes, you need not lose anything by going with an independent online computer builder over a large brand. Large brands generally try to avoid cheating their customers in terms of quality, as doing so would sully their brand and kill their ability to make sales. But independent online computer builders also assume their customers will come back to them time and time again, so naturally they are keen to give their customers the best products at the best prices too.

So just as with anything else you plan to purchase online (even brand name products) doing a bit of research into who is the most reliable provider of a custom built PC in your area is a prudent first step. The small amount of time you will need to invest into doing so will see a more than adequate return in the hundreds of pounds you could save on your new computer. Why not try searching for the term 'custom built pc' on Google for example, doing so will return a wealth of interesting results for you to pick your way through.

Smartphones encroach on laptop territory

Written by oneself on 6:29 AM

by Sandy Cosser

With the advent of netbooks and the increasing sophistication of smartphones a cross-over of mobile industries seems inevitable, especially as people demand more from technology that they also demand be smaller and more convenient to use.

The second edition iPhone was heralded as the leader in smartphone/computer hybrid innovations. Since then Blackberry has also narrowed the gap between computers and mobiles phones, and regular mobile phone manufacturers, not traditionally considered smartphones, have introduced mobile phones with smartphone-like capabilities. Now, Nokia is taking the phenomenon a step further with a mobile phone that they're marketing as a mobile computer.

The Nokia N97 has a 3.5 inch touch display with unimaginable screen resolution, a QWERTY keyboard, integrated WiFi and Bluetooth and 32GB onboard flash memory with the option to add another 16GB via microSD. But one the coolest elements, and the thing that is probably most significant in its "mobile computer" label is the fact that the screen slides up and rests at an angle to reveal the keyboard; very netbook-like.

And then there is social location, which uses the GPS receiver and compass to ensure that the phone always knows where it is, which it integrates with social networking capabilities that enables it to broadcast your position to specified friends and family. And the home screen, which Matthew Millar from ZDNet says has been completely revamped so that you can manage widgets.

Larry Dignan (also from ZDNet) and Millar both believe that we're heading towards a world where smartphones and laptops collide, and both believe that while the Nokia N97 is a significant step in that direction, we're not quite there yet. Millar sticks out his neck a bit further than Dignan, however, by stating that Nokia will probably lead the way in the hybrid chase, as they have the right vision of the future and the flexibility to make it work.

Until that day comes, however, we'll have to make do with the N97 in all its €550 glory (before tax). Dignan puts the figure at around $650 for American consumers, which makes the N97 way more expensive than your average netbook. But at least you have time to save for it as the multimedia computer or "Desktop.Laptop.Pocket" as Nokia refers to it, will only be available early in 2009.

Ming Xing A008 Touch Screen Phone - Why This Quad Band With Dual Sim Slots is Great For Texters

Written by oneself on 7:52 AM

By Rae Edwards

I believe that few would argue that the iPhone technology is pretty sweet and innovative. The finger touch interface and all of the features stuffed into one phone are pretty hard to resist. But, some people have a few sticking points that keep them from committing to this phone. The first is the contract requirement, which can be pretty pricey. And the second is texting and messaging on the flat touch screen. Some people don't have an issue with this at all and love using the flat screen for every purpose. But, some old school consumers really want actual plastic keys for speed and feel. The Chinese Ming Xing A008 offers the best of both of these worlds. I will discuss some of the highlights of this phone in this article.

A Large Screen And A Real Keyboard And Scroll Bar: Many of the texting clones have stingy little screens to keep the size of the phone reasonable. But, this one manages a 3.0 inch touch screen with a pretty generous keyboard and scroll bar. This is a regular sized phone, but it isn't huge or too wide. It measures 118 x 57 x 15 mm and weighs about 140 grams. The size is large enough to see a nice, clear picture on the screen and to comfortably text with even large hands, but it's not so large that this phone looks like a relic.

All Four Bands And Two Sim Slots: The A008 is a quad band which means that it works world wide with just about any carrier that is GSM and uses a sim card. Speaking of the cards, this phone has room for two of them. You just insert them into the phone and off you go. This allows you to have two separate numbers or two different plans. A popular option is to find a low carrier talk / text plan and to use another "to go" pre paid sim for web browsing when you need or want it. However, if you have no need for this, inserting only one card and that will work too.

Everything Else: There is very little that this phone doesn't have. It has MMS, SMS, WAP, and GPRS capabilities. It has an MP3 / MP4 player as well as a web browser, radio, camera and web cam, e book reader, and Bluetooth.

It's Cheap: The price on this phone is low, even in the world of clones. Most times, you'll pay under $100 for it. Perhaps the reason for this is that it's not your typical iPhone copy. It doesn't look like the iPhone, but not everyone wants this anyway, and it does contain all of the popular features. In my opinion it's a very nice little phone that's very inexpensive considering what you are getting.
