Life, or Blackberry?

Written by oneself on 5:57 AM

By: Elisah Van Vriesland

With the integration of wireless Internet on such devices as the iPhone, Blackberry and Google’s Android phone, the past few years have seen an emerging phenomenon of 24/7 connectivity. However, research suggests those who choose to correspond via email, text messages or social networks are prone to health problems and diminished professionalism, as a rush to get a message across supersedes the need for human interaction. The key is to decipher in what circumstances technological advances are necessary and in which we’re better off without them.

Short Text, Long History:

Though the phrase ‘text me’ is now part of the lexicon of modern life, Short Message Service (SMS) actually languished in technological obscurity for more than a decade after the concept was initially developed in the early 1980’s. It was not until 1992 that the first SMS was sent over a UK network and only by the end of 2000 did SMS texts become a regular commercial feature for the majority of contracted users. As SMS quickly became an ever more relevant method of communication with the average Joe, entrepreneurs and professionals were presented with a toy of their own, the Blackberry. Combining the latest mobile phone with a hand held computer, the blackberry gave workaholics access to their emails, office networks and documents, and made it possible to conduct business from anywhere.

Health Risk:

A disturbing side effect of this increasing connectivity has been its effect on face-to-face interaction. It has now become possible to complete your commute without looking at another human being, or attend a dinner party having had fifteen simultaneous conversations with friends who were not actually there. Professor Gayle Porter of Rutgers University led research that signified the health risks of such behaviour, outlining that 'addiction to technology can be as equally damaging [as chemical or substance addictions] to a worker's mental health'.

Talkers vs. Texters:

Brand new mobile phones that include a plethora of socially interactive technologies may also be contributing to the higher levels of anxiety and depression amongst teenagers and young adults. In research conducted at the University of Plymouth, Reid & Reid (2004) split an experimental group into ‘talkers’ or ‘texters’ based on a qualitative analysis. They discovered that although the majority of both texters and talkers preferred face-to-face communication, over a quarter of the texters preferred texting – 4 times the number of talkers who preferred texting. Texters were also found to be more socially anxious and lonely than the talkers.

Embellish vs. Displace:

"Social networking sites should allow us to embellish our social lives, but what we find is very different. The tail is wagging the dog. These are not tools that enhance, they are tools that displace." Dr. Aric Sigman, a biologist, has warned that a lack of human interaction paralleled with innovations in technology could result in a range of health problems, such as upset immune responses, altered hormone levels, malfunction of arteries and a decrease in mental performance.

In the BBC article, Dr. Sigman also cited research in which face-to-face interaction has fallen dramatically since 1987, signifying that modern technologies are hindering the way we interact with other human beings. Advancements in technology should enhance rather than diminish our social lives.

Ease of access vs. Professionalism:

The appeal of email and instant messaging still boasts an obvious answer - It’s free and it’s instant. To avoid busy signals and high phone bills, the internet provides a more cost-effective way to interact with workmates, clients and within a personal context. However, these mediums simply cannot replace real phone conversations or face-to-face meetings in the workplace. A poll on Edutopia has also expressed the concern of social media within an educational environment: "As more and more students immerse themselves in Textspeak over their cell phones and computers, educators worry that their writing skills are suffering. [...] There is concern that students who frequently express themselves in abbreviations and smiley faces may lose the capacity for more nuanced, grammatically correct writing."

Put simply, a level of formality is needed to gain trust in all three businesses, educational establishments and in individuals. Where businesses cut corners on formal conversations, carelessness in quick correspondence could hinder progress in both our social and professional lives.

Written by oneself on 9:16 PM

By: Gerardo Medina

Apple Inc.'s 3G iPhone is now out in the market. With its release comes the opportunity for all of us to have a hands-on feel of the latest communication wonder. Before packing our bags and get ready to rush to the line, it would be best to consider a few things.

Recent 3G iPhone reviews:

The Price
The buzz about these 3G iPhones suddenly becomes an apple to the senses knowing that on top of being faster, it is "half the price" of the older version. What about the service plan? It's now $70 per month compared to the original $60 a month (exclusive of the text plan). This only means that you are gonna pay an extra for the text messaging plan depending on the package that you are taking.

iPhone User?
If you are currently using an iPhone and still under an existing plan, you will be able to upgrade to the newer version by paying an early upgrade fee which will add up to the price of the latest edition depending on whether you are considering an 8GB or a 16GB model.

Features
According to reviews, the latest 3G iPhone needs some improvements on its copy/paste and saving files function. Another thing is that the phone's camera being a high-end product, fall a little short of the expectations.

Battery life
Due to the use of the 3G network, the new iPhone batteries drains a lot faster and based on stress tests the batteries last shorter than what they claim.

This time....the Good News!
Great Sound Quality
The new 3G iPhone prides itself to belong to those that produces the best sound quality in the phone industry today.

App Store of Apple

This is really great and getting access to an app to compensate whatever feature the new 3G iPhone is lacking is just perfect! The store is available to both 3G and non-3G iPhones.

Advancement in the world of technology is in itself constantly in a race and the market entry of the latest 3G iPhone of Apple Inc. is a work of art. Top 7 Tips to Learn Before Downloading

Written by oneself on 9:07 PM

By Yih Long Tan

Are you searching for an iPhone download service? I know I was! Now you need to find your favourite media files to upload into your iPhone. Many download sites have been created on the internet over the past months, some amazing and some just downright horrible. Learning to choose the best iPhone download site is very important. Most of these sites charge approximately the same fee, and it is quite impossible to know which are the good and which are the bad unless you join their service. In order to find the best iPhone download service, the following 7 factors are a good indicator of whether the download service is of good quality or not.

1. Huge database of media

This is especially essential for any iPhone download site, and surprisingly, there are several poor iPhone sites that simply have a very limited range of media. The best iPhone download sites will allow you to find a large collection of media from different genres. It should also provide a wide range of media, like music, TV shows, movies and games all with a one time membership.

2. High speed and quality downloads

Being able to download media at a fast speed is important too. Several poor iPhone download sites have a download speed limit to allow more people to download at the same time. Downloading files from these sites often produce a lot of problems because of the small size of their server, causing many interruptions and errors during download. Good iPhone download sites have very large server space and therefore are able to cope with a large amount of downloads at the same time, and not causing any interruptions.

3. Service Fees

Most good iPhone download services charge a reasonable price for unlimited downloads. If you are considering to download large number of files for your iPhone, you should join a one time fee membership site. Another option that you may choose is the pay per download plan. The more media you download from these sites, the more money you will have to pay. We do not advise that you join pay per download sites, since your costs can accumulate very quickly and you never know how many files you may want to download next. Getting good value for money is very important here.

4. Support and converter software

Some files that you download from the iPhone membership sites may not be fully compatible with your iPhone. Luckily, most quality iPhone download sites provide converter software, whereas the poor quality ones will expect you to get the software yourself. Software that allow you to transfer the files to your iPhone easily should also be provided.

5. Technical support

Occasionally you might encounter problems with the software that the download sites provide you. A good technical support team will quickly help you resolve any issues that you have. If you join a poor quality iPhone download site, you may be stuck with technical issues and have to wait days before you can even get into contact with their staff.

6. Security of files

High quality iPhone download sites will scan files before you download them to ensure that they are free of spyware and adware. You should not put your computer at risk by downloading files from poor iPhone download sites.

7. Legal or no?

The top iPhone download sites respect copyright laws and ensure that all its media files are safe and legal for download. Thus by downloading from top iPhone sites, you do not have to worry about getting into trouble with the law.

iPhone Hacks & Software – Getting Closer to iPhone Unlocking

Written by oneself on 4:13 AM

By: Philip Nicosia

With the iPhone news of the Apple launch, the number of iPhone hacks has increased exponentially and a great deal of energy has been put into working through the iPhone software to find where the passwords and the “glue” is for a number of apps. The “Holy Grail” at the moment is iPhone unlocking.

iPhone unlocking is in fact most requested hack, and unlocking means that the iPhone can be used on any network and not just AT&T’s. There have been a couple of claims to have managed this iPhone hack ultimate but so far it’s all just rumors though it seems that a couple are indeed getting close and have managed to gain ownership of the file system. Sieving through the iPhone software and especially the gif images that are embedded seems to be the number preoccupation of any self respecting iPhone hack merchant around the globe.

One writer at GigaOM claims that they have gotten all the iPhone functions working except the telephone, voicemail and text features. To be honest I don’t see the point in all of this, getting an iPhone hack to unlock the beast is not going to be of much use unless you use the iPhone overseas and on top of that you’ll have no 3G support.

Where I do see a value in getting the iPhone software opened up, is that once we have the iPhone unlocked then being able to use the device as an ultimately portable minicomputer working over a wifi network then we have something that’s going to be useful.

On the iPhone news grapevine, it’s not just iPhone hacks that are streaming in thick and fast, there are also a series of full-blown web apps which I have to say is pretty impressive – well done guys! Probably the best one at the moment is the iPhone hack “iChat for iPhone” which provides you with IM capability on AIM. More than that, the iPhone software source is available for this hack and you can host it on your own machine. If you are really serious about keeping up-to-date with the latest in iPhone unlocking and iPhone hacks then check out the iPhone Dev Wiki that seems to me to be the closest to getting an iPhone unlocking hack.

iPhone software that you can download onto your new iPhone can be found at iPhone Applications on the web. Here you’ll find all iPhone software and applications such as iWeather and more games than you can shake a stick at. Unfortunately, until we get iPhone hack that will open up the iPhone to third party applications we are going to have to make do with Apple iPhone software
that we’re allowed to play with at the moment.

How long before we have an iPhone hack that will help us unlock the iPhone completely is like asking how long is a piece of string, but with the energy that is being devoted to it, I guess it could be any day now.

With the iPhone news of the Apple launch, the number of iPhone hacks has increased exponentially and a great deal of energy has been put into working through the iPhone software to find where the passwords and the “glue” is for a number of apps. The “Holy Grail” at the moment is iPhone unlocking.

Phone Tips and Tricks: Get the Most Out of Your iPhone Experience

Written by oneself on 4:08 AM

by CJ Prato

All of us folks who are lucky enough to already have an iPhone know how much fun they can be just to play around with. Playing with my iPhone a lot myself, I have discovered some cool tips and tricks that you may find useful.

1. If you tap once at the very top of the screen when you are on the internet, it will take you back to the top of the window rather than having to scroll all the way back up. A nice time saving feature.

2. If you set the font to the smallest size, you can read more in the internet window. An advantage of this is that when you want to click a link, you can pinch (expand) that area and the link will come up very large, making it much easier to click.

3. Rather than posting the full address of internet sites in bookmarks, you can post the equivalent RSS address instead into Apple's RSS reader and save that as your bookmark. This way you can quickly see if there's anything interesting on your favorite site rather than downloading the whole homepage.

4. If you are writing something and the iPhone flags a word as misspelled that you know is not misspelled, cancel the correction 3 times and the word will be put into the dictionary. If you write a lot, this feature is quite useful!

5. The magnifying glass is a nice iPhone tool when you are typing an email or any other text. If you tap once and hold, a magnifying glass will pop up showing you a zoomed in view of your words and cursor. You can now easily place the cursor wherever you want. This makes editing your writing very easy.

6. You can move icons around, but not on the home screen. You have to go to the ipod section. Go to iPod > More > Edit. Now you can drag your icons all around. This can also be done in the phone section.

7. To reset your iphone, hold down the right button and the "home" front button for about 6 seconds. To power it back on, push the top button. This is different than a regular shutdown, which can be done easily by holding the sleep/wake button for 6 seconds.

8. If you get a lot of spam e-mail or other unwanted e-mail, pay attention to this time saving feature. Add a link to Yahoo mail in Safari bookmarks. From there you can check 'delete all' to remove all unwanted e-mails. This is much easier than deleting hundreds of spam e-mails one at a time.

Apple's Safari for Windows, What is the World Coming to?

Written by oneself on 5:24 AM

by: Anja Merret

Do successful companies work with external partners when developing new products and services? It would be interesting to evaluate whether it makes a difference to the success of an enterprise whether a company uses its own internal resources for development or whether it is open to external businesses. Opening to outsiders could involve sharing marketing, business and manufacturing intellectual property. Dangerous?

I thought of this question when I was listening to Steve Jobs and Bill Gates talk about their years in the computer industry. Initially Apple felt it wanted to do everything on its own such as manufacture hardware and develop the software to run on it. Whereas Microsoft always looked to external partners to develop software with. Microsoft is certainly the bigger business and has made more money than Apple, even though they started up within a year of each other.

The discussion, which is keeping cyberspace humming at the moment, is about Safari and why Apple would suddenly produce a Windows version of its browser application. Is Apple now wanting to compete with Microsoft one wonders. As is want, theories are flying about, one better than the next, it seems.

One particular interesting one is the fact, which I hadn't heard of before, that Mozilla earns a fair amount of revenue from the search bar in its browser. I use Firefox on my Mac, as well as Safari, and I had never taken much notice of the branded little G in the search box. I always search off Google's site rather than direct out of the browser bar.

The reason why I use Firefox is because some websites just don't work in Safari. I had one this morning freeze on me. Pruhealth (boo to you) wouldn't allow me to fill in the form for a quote. So I had to go through the whole process again on Firefox. Of course, if Safari is available for Windows, it could mean that web developers would actually test their site on Safari as well. And then Pruhealth's site would actually possibly work on a Mac. One can hope. I must say, Mac users have suffered this kind of abuse for years, so most of us don't even get annoyed anymore.

What could be a further reason would be to allow the computer geeks out there to play with Safari, just for fun. However, just look at photographs of 'computer geek' get togethers and you would be absolutely amazed at the number of Macs in the audience. Have a look at pictures taken at the Hack Day held by Yahoo BBC in London this last week-end, by checking out flickr and searching for Hack Day 2007 pics. Count the Macs. Actually count the non-Macs, that would be easier.

So it's not that the computer geeks would need to play on Safari. They are already doing that. What would be a more realistic reason for this unusual action by Apple is the fact that the iPhone runs on Safari. What Apple might be looking for is a greater developer pool to work on cool new apps for their mobile phone. And it does certainly look like there is a fair interest in Safari. Apple reported that one million copies of the Windows beta version of Safari had been downloaded within the first 48hrs of it becoming available.

Whatever the reason for Apple's move, which will eventually be revealed to us all, one thing is for certain. It will grow the business if the theory of using external developers to develop ones own business is a valid one. As an aside, during recent years, Apple has been using and hugely encouraging external developers already. But making a Mac application available to Windows users is a further gigantic step in this direction. To read more about the business principle as mentioned here read Tom Peters book Re-Imagine.

The Apple iPhone Is Changing The Future Of Mobile Devices

Written by oneself on 2:34 PM

by Michael Ferrerya

Since it's beginning, Apple's main goal is to please their customers. Apple realizes the importance of customer satisfaction and customer-friendly devices. With the iPhone Apple took the mobile phone to a new level of entertainment and communication. The iPhone features the functions of a mobile phone with text messaging, a video iPod, and Internet capabilities.

Apple made this device feature some of the most popular services and functions today. Apple also decided to get rid of the annoying key pad, stylus, and tiny keys and instead make the display larger. Apple made the screen a touch screen with virtual key boards and key pads that appear depending on the function you are using. The main issue with most of todays cell phones is the size of the display, as well as the size of the key pad and key board. If you are trying to make a phone call then a key pad will appear and if you are trying to surf online, Email, text message, or write a document then a virtual key board will appear.

Text messaging has become increasingly popular over the past two or three years. If you are one of the millions of text message senders then you will be thrilled with the SMS application with predictive QWERTY soft keyboards which prevents and correct your spelling mistakes.

The iPhone comes Internet ready with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth ready. The operating system on the iPhone also makes it stand out in the crowd. Apple used their MAC OS X operating system, allowing you to view the Internet the way it was supposed to be seen. With the iPhone you are able to enjoy the convenient touch screen while using the Safari web browser, address book, note taking applications, and calendar. This phone is so advanced that it can correct and even prevent spelling errors.

With the iPhone you can also check your voice mail as if they were Emails, basically eliminating being forced to listen to all of your messages when you are only trying to find one specific message.

The iPhone's touch screen is not only easier to use, but it is more advanced and has the ability to tell the difference between a human finger and the side of a human face when talking, or a large surface when in a pocket or bag. With the iPhone you can also zoom in and out of objects on web pages or photos by pinching them and un-pinching them. Pinching is when you draw apart or close together two fingers as if you were stretching or squeezing the image.

The Apple iPhone is set to be released in June of 2007. You will only be able to purchase an iPhone exclusively through AT&T, the new Cingular. You will also be required to sign a two year service agreement. Apple is going to release two different sized versions, 4GB and 8GB. The 4GB will cost you $499 and for double the memory the 8GB will cost you only $100 more at $599. Look online for information regarding iPhone wallpaper.
