Digital-Visual-Interface cables or more commonly known as DVI-cables are a relatively new addition to the multimedia connector line-up. Superseding VGA cables, DVI cables have gained popularity due to their higher definition and inclusion on higher end Video Cards for gaming computers. As monitors graduated from the classic CRT to the now standard LCD, VGA connectivity was dropped due to the higher resolution needs of the LCD monitor.
DVI-cables come in mostly two varieties: single, and dual. Single Link DVI interfaces feature six less pin slots than their Dual Link brothers and can only transmit WUXGA resolution 1920 × 1200 pixels @ 60 Hz with a bandwidth of 3.96 Gbit/s compared to WQXGA resolution 2560 × 1600 pixels @ 60 Hz at a bandwidth limit of 7.92 Gbit/s.
The superior quality of DVI over analog cables result from the fact that DVI cables are able to deliver sharper pictures with deeper blacks on larger and larger LCD screens both digital home televisions as well as monitors for desktops and laptops. One added benefit of selecting DVI over other multimedia interfaces is the separating of visual signals from audio signals. Some will argue that bundling audio and visual such as HDMI, Component, S-Video, or Composite cables will degrade and interfere with video signals. Users also have the benefit of selecting their own method of audio interface separate from their video needs.
Most DVI cables are actually DVI-I standard and include the ability to transmit both analog and digital signals, so that analog receivers equipped with the DVI interface may still interact. DVI cables have become nearly the absolute standard in professional and home computer use and enjoy a high standard, set apart from other multimedia interface adapters which prove costly and degrade signal based on cable length. Video game enthusiasts and graphic designers enjoy the ability to support multiple monitors with DVI cables and rely on their extremely fast response time for their software needs.
