Noise cancelling headphones use circuitry inside the headset that blocks out external background noise when activated. This can be extremely useful when travelling on an aircraft or a train for instance, when there is constant, low-level background noise present. This article will give some impartial reviews and advice on noise cancelling or noise reduction headphones manufactured by Sony. There are several models of noise cancelling headphones available from Sony including 2 full-size headsets, the MDR-NC6 and MDR-NC50, and 1 in ear model, the MDR-NC11.
Sony’s most affordable noise cancelling headphones are the MDR-NC6, they are lightweight and comfortable to wear giving good rich sound quality. The headphones fold away neatly for compact storage in the soft padded carrying case which is supplied. On the down side, the noise cancelling abilities were not that great but having said that, for the price, performance is more than acceptable.
At the other end of the scale, the MDR-NC50 are Sony’s most expensive noise cancelling headphones offering a substantial full size over-ear design giving excellent noise reduction combined with a distinctly upmarket feel. The rich sound quality is excellent with powerful bass response and detailed sound. A neat feature is a monitor switch on the side of the earcup which mutes the music to let in outside sound should you so desire. The Sony MDR-NC50 are a bulky pair of headphones which may not appeal to some users, they may also be unsuitable for smaller MP3 players that do not have sufficient power to drive them, making the sound seem quieter than it should. However, these noise cancelling headphones are an excellent buy and are comparable to competitors at much higher price points.
The Sony MDR-NC11 in ear noise cancellation headphones give a great combination of economical design and remarkable performance. These earbuds offer fantastic noise cancellation across all frequency ranges and they are very comfortable to wear, lightweight with excellent sound quality. At a price of around £60, the Sony MDR-NC11 in ear noise cancellation headphones are great value and come recommended.
