Mobile Wireless Router Spotlight: WiFlyer Mobile

Written by oneself on 8:07 AM

By: Dean Forster

With the introduction of wireless networks, people find it easier to install and configure a network. However, until a few years back, if you wanted to connect to the Internet or to connect to a network, you had to plug in a network cable and were restricted to stay near a UPT cable plug. If you wanted to move around, there were very difficult and expensive solutions. Engineers have developed a series of wireless devices able to transmit data around a building, but at very low speeds and huge costs. When the wi-fi standards had been established, people and organizations were given the opportunity to connect with one another without using any wires at all, at convenient costs and a decent connection speed in the same time. The technologies have evolved significantly. There are many devices that are wi-fi compatible that allow you to access the Internet from wi-fi spots and wireless networks: laptops, PDAs and 3g phones are just some of the mobile devices incorporating wireless chips. In fact, the networks have evolved so quickly, that they offer speeds similar to broadband connections.

Wireless equipment manufacturers design devices that are more and more advanced and this can be seen in their size. A mobile wireless router can be the size of a PDA. The WiFlyer router is a powerful device allowing you to set a wireless network in no time and to configure and secure it easily. You can connect between them all sorts of wi-fi compatible devices, such as modern laptops, video phones supporting wi-fi technologies and USB or PCI wireless network cards.

The WiFlyer mobile wireless router supports the latest 802.11 standards, the 802.11b and the 802.11g specifications. This translates to a speed of over 54Mbs and it is able to send and receive data for a radius of up to 200 ft (at these distances it supports a speed of over 11Mbs). If you are interested in securing your wireless network, the WiFlyer mobile wireless router supports 128-bit WEP protection to make sure no one accesses your network unauthorized. The WiFlyer is relatively simple to install and configure. All you have to do is to connect it to the main internet connection and it will automatically configure itself with the required settings. It also supports dial-up connections and it is able to share the available internet connection between several devices. It comes with an external power adapter, but it very compact (in fact it is smaller than the router itself), making the device a truly portable unit. In independent reviews, the WiFlyer mobile wireless router was able to send and receive data through concrete walls inside a bureau office, making it a viable solution for businesses and private networks.

You May Think That Your Home Computer Network Is As Safe As Bug In A Rug - It Is Not

Written by oneself on 4:21 AM

You may think that your home computer internet network is as safe as a “bug in a rug”. After all your Linksys or D-Link brand or another popular brand offers state of the art security features. Perhaps you have the standard WEP 64, or the “safe as the banks “WEP 128 encryption format. Perhaps you have even gone one step further to the ultra newer safe WPA router data security formats or even to greater security heights.

Your computer network is ultra secure. Or so you think and have beer reassured. Perhaps you have even had a “computer security professional “do the setup and maintenance,

And yet your personal data or banking information may be stolen. Your children may be directed to “bad “internet sites or worse. Your windows security updates may be compromised leaving your computer and network open to wide and wider scale attacks on your computer. Your confidential passwords – whether they are for email, medical, airline or even banking may be compromised or stolen. Finally your computer may be utilized as a “zombie” in large scale denial of service attacks on the internet. Your computer and many thousands of other may be set, waiting patiently for long periods of time, to be activated as a sleeper agent. Which along with many thousand of other remote computers are set on secret activation to altogether overwhelm some target whether it be government computers, the CNN online news network or whatever?

How are all of these threats possible? Computer security is always a case of cat and mouse with human ingenuity always at the root of the game. The hackers do this,
The computer security network react to fix the security hole it issue – whether it be Microsoft, Apple Computer or the Computer Hardware of Computer Hardware accessories manufacturers . And then the computer hackers think of an alternate means of attack.

In this case, even though it apparently seems that even though your wireless or simple cabled non wireless computer network has another gaping security hole. Home routers are at risk of being compromised by remote hackers. As a result of innocently or inadvertently visiting web pages malicious standard java script type software can access the controls of your home router and reset the controls inside the router to cause you big trouble.

Your router can be set to visit certain sites instead of where you wish to go. This may be simply to redirect you to sites containing advertising of the villain’s daily choice. You may be taken inadvertently to websites which in a flash download further viscous and mean software, on a regular basis. Or even worse you may be taken to fake sites which are not what they represent. For example you may well type in the bank of America bankofamerica.com website. You may even have searched the name by Google. You will think you are being directed to this banking website where you enter your account name and password only to discover you cannot access your account because you are a bogus copy of the front page of that website whose purpose is to steal your banking account and passwords.

The answer to this security problem is simple. Simply change the administration password in your router from the default out of the box, out of the manual and factory to anything else.

As a result the malicious java script will not be able to unlock and enter your router and do its damage. The simple answer to these router security issues and securing your router firmly is to easily and simply change the administration password on your router – whether it is wireless or a wired router. Now your home computer network and router will be safe from this threat.

Discover Sprint EVDO and Verizon EVDO Services

Written by oneself on 6:52 AM

By Jon Arnold

If you are the type of person who starts to shake and get a cold sweat whenever you are not able to get an Internet connection with your laptop, there is hope for you. One of the hottest technologies available today, which is gaining tremendous momentum every day, is the EVDO data services, where the leaders are Sprint EVDO and Verizon EVDO.

What is EVDO? It is a card that plugs into your laptop computer, either PCMCIA or USB, that allows you to connect to the Internet via the provider's network. Some of the newer high-end laptops are coming with EVDO service already built in, although this is almost a waste if you want Sprint EVDO and Verizon EVDO is built in, or vice versa.

No longer do you need to be at a Starbucks or wireless coffee shop or hotel to be able to connect to the Internet. EVDO stands for Evolution Data Only/Evolution Data Optimized, and you will frequently see it abbreviated as EVDO, EV-DO, EvDO, 1xEV-DO or 1xEvDO. EVDO provides fast wireless broadband (also known as "3G") Internet connectivity service directly to your laptop. You take the internet with you and surf the web in your car, on the train, in the airport, at a convention, on the road in your RV.

The speed of the initial rollout of EVDO (1xEVDO) is available in most metropolitan areas throughout the United States. The newer release of EVDO known as "Rev 0" is available in about 200 metro cities through the US, and both Sprint and Verizon are rolling out "Rev A" EVDO to upgrade the current implementation, as well as starting to cover more areas continually.

In terms of speed and performance, EVDO is superb. The Rev-A EVDO service delivers about 600-800k downloads and 300-400k uploads with a good signal from the cellular carrier. But even the older "Rev 0" speeds give you tremendous flexibility, although speeds are only about 2-3 times faster than a dialup connection. But even so, the flexibility of being able to get online virtually anywhere makes this a tremendous boon to those who don't want to be tethered to a wireless coffee shop or hotel lobby.

Cingular also offers something similar to EVDO on their networks, although at the time of this writing, it is typically not nearly as fast and does not have nearly the wide coverage throughout the US that the Sprint and Verizon EVDO networks do.

Sprint and Verizon are constantly leap-frogging each other in terms of which one covers more area and which one is faster.

One thing to watch for is the cost, which is a function of how much you download over the course of the month. Both Sprint EVDO and Verizon EVDO have plans that allow 20mb per month, 50mb per month, and various levels, as well as an "unlimited" plan. With the size of most websites these days, you can burn through that download limit in a day or two, so the unlimited plan provides your best value. However, be aware that with Verizon, unlimited does not mean unlimited. If you use Verizon EVDO "too much", they will shut off your EVDO service for the remainder of the month. Verizon has yet to actually state how much is "too much", but it is definitely not "unlimited" according to the dictionary definition of the word. By contrast, the Sprint EVDO unlimited plan, at least for now, is truly unlimited.
