*** Dealing with Password Management Issues - Self-service Password Reset

Password management is the most common IT support issue bringing most helpdesk workload in many organizations. Password complexity and expiration policy requirements lead to frequently forgotten passwords and account lockouts, increasing overall administrative burden.

*** Addressing Password Management Challenges in Loosely Connected and non-Domain Environments

Loosely connected environment is a one which has computers not permanently wired to corporate network, for example laptops used during business trips and remote employees' computers connected over VPNs. Password management is such environments introduces many challenges and can compromise enterprise security if managed in a wrong way. Imagine the situation when users forget passwords or get their accounts locked out while being out of office for business trip, e.g. on-site customer visit. Well, user can call helpdesk and ask for password reset, or use automated self-service password reset solution, like mentioned above, but to log on locally after password reset the computer must be connected to network, otherwise only cached logon information can be used and this obviously will not work. If he or she can't connect to organization's domain (quite usual situation on customer site, for example), but need to use laptop immediately, to conduct presentation to important customer?

Probably not the best but simplest way to get around situations like described above is to use local, non-domain accounts. As soon as local account becomes locked out or password needs to be reset, laptop user can call helpdesk, ask for local Administrator password, log on and fix local account themselves (unlock or reset), bingo! But most organizations restrict privileged access to their computers and users don't know local Administrator password for security reasons and this is actually a very good practice. The drawback here is that whenever local account becomes locked, only authorized computer administrator can login and resolve the issue. But when users are out of office, nobody can help them except for giving privileged access to system (like saying local admin password by phone), thus violating security and compromising company's business assets.

Newly released Desktop Password Reset product is the answer to this problem. Now users can securely resolve password issues and account lockouts on their computers without gaining privileged access to the system and it will not require any assistance from administrators and IT helpdesk. The product uses the question and answer security system for local user authentication: users register their secret answers at first successful logon and then can manage their passwords and unlock accounts without any network access using extended Windows logon prompt by supplying previously entered answers.

Troubleshooting Your Computer

If you’re going to be building computers, adding devices to your computer, altering BIOS settings, or just installing and deleting programs on your computer, then you’ll want to learn the basics of troubleshooting. You might notice that I didn’t say computer troubleshooting. That is because troubleshooting is an independent skill. I learned to troubleshoot as an electronic technician. And most of those same techniques work fine for troubleshooting computers.


Troubleshooting is really a kind of detective work. If you notice, the TV detectives spend a lot of time asking questions and thinking over the facts. And that is where a good troubleshooter starts, asking questions, not with tearing apart their computer, swapping components, or running diagnostics programs.


My intent here isn’t to give you heavy technical troubleshooting instructions, but to provide you with common sense techniques that will likely save you a lot of time and trouble if you follow them.


Take note: I am assuming a basic to intermediate knowledge on the part of the computer user for this article. In other words, that you either build computers or add components to it, like hard drives or CD drives. I also assume you have a basic understanding of the boot process. Finally, I assume you know basic electrical safety rules.


A Typical Scenario


Let’s say one evening you turn on your computer and it starts, seems to boot fine, but stops dead at the point it should start loading Windows. What now? You panic of course. Like most of us you haven’t saved copies of your most important documents for months. And since Windows isn’t loading from the hard drive, you “logically” assume there is a serious problem with the hard drive. It must be physically broken or the data is scrambled.


Since you’re in panic mode you tear the hard drive out of your other working computer and try to boot the first computer. The same thing happens, it stops at the point of loading Windows. What a relief, at least the problem isn’t with the hard drive, your data is safe - there is probably a fault with the motherboard in the first computer.


To make sure, you test the hard drive from your first computer (the one that wouldn’t load Windows) in your second computer, it works fine. That confirms it, there is a problem with the motherboard on the first computer. Probably the hard drive controller, you think, being the expert.

Network Troubleshooting Commands

Troubleshooting computer network is among the most important job descriptions of the network administrators, system administrators, network technicians and the IT consultants. A computer network can have different kinds of problems such as it can be infected with virus and spyware, attacked by hackers, accessed by unauthorized users and may face connectivity failure issues due to the faulty network devices or configurations. Following is a list of the basic network troubleshooting commands that are built-in the Windows based operating systems and UNIX etc. The right use of these troubleshooting commands can helps a lot in diagnosing and resolving the issues with your computer network.

PING

Ping is the most important troubleshooting command and it checks the connectivity with the other computers. For example your system’s IP address is 10.10.10.10 and your network servers’ IP address is 10.10.10.1 and you can check the connectivity with the server by using the Ping command in following format.

At DOS prompt type Ping 10.10.10.1 and press enter

If you get the reply from the server then the connectivity is ok and if you get the error message like this “Request time out” this means the there is some problem in the connectivity with the server.

IPCONFIG

IPconfig is another important command in Windows. It shows the IP address of the computer and also it shows the DNS, DHCP, Gateway addresses of the network and subnet mask.

At DOS prompt type ipconfig and press enter to see the IP address of your computer.

At DOS prompt type inconfig/all and press enter to see the detailed information.

NSLOOKUP

NSLOOKUP is a TCP/IP based command and it checks domain name aliases, DNS records, operating system information by sending query to the Internet Domain Name Servers. You can resolve the errors with the DNS of your network server


HOSTNAME

Hostname command shows you the computer name.

At DOS prompt type Hostname and press enter


NETSTAT

NETSTAT utility shows the protocols statistics and the current established TCP/IP connections in the computer.

NBTSTAT

NBTSTAT helps to troubleshoot the NETBIOS name resolutions problems.

ARP

ARP displays and modifies IP to Physical address translation table that is used by the ARP protocols.

FINGER

Finger command is used to retrieve the information about a user on a network.

TRACERT

Tracert command is used to determine the path of the remote system. This tool also provides the number of hops and the IP address of each hop. For example if you want to see that how many hops (routers) are involved to reach www.yahoo.com and what’s the IP address of each hop then use the following command.

At command prompt type tracert www.yahoo.com you will see a list of all the hops and their IP addresses.

TRACEROUTE

Traceroute is a very useful network debugging command and it is used in locating the server that is slowing down the transmission on the internet and it also shows the route between the two systems.

ROUTE

Route command allows you to make manual entries in the routing table.
