Mobile Phone Security Software Remembers A Virus' Birthday

Typically we associate birthdays as joyous occasions. Candles are blown out. Gifts are given. Fibs about our real age cause our friends and family members to chuckle with delight. Sometimes birthdays of beloved figures in human history are even commemorated decades or centuries after their deaths. However, one birthday that mobile phone users would like to forget, is the appearance of the first mobile phone virus. Fortunately, mobile phone security software can now be used to detect and destroy viruses before they harm our mobile phones.

Today's mobile phones resemble gadgets that we might expect to see in Dick Tracy comics or James Bond films. They can contain an array of features, including Internet access, radios, games, cameras, and even mobile phone security software. However, one drawback of using mobile phones that can send and receive electronic data is the chance that the phones can be infected with viruses.

The first mobile phone virus that could duplicate on its own was discovered on June 15, 2004. A Finnish and Russian anti-virus company jointly reported the mobile phone malware (software created to penetrate or harm a computer system without the owner's informed permission) used wireless technology to spread to other mobile phones. Nearing the first virus's second birthday, roughly 200 mobile phone viruses existed. Several of them are simply variations of the first virus.

The good news is that mobile phone security software is now available, and experts believe that it is improbable that the virus situation will become as troublesome as that of PCs. The difference is that when PC viruses were initially discovered in 1986, hardware and software producers were not creating solutions to viruses. Today, however, both manufacturers of cell phones and their operating systems are joining forces to attack the problem. One result has been mobile phone security software that can even recognize and destroy the newest mobile phone viruses.

On the other hand, cell phone malware is developing into an industry that could eventually become very profitable for "cybercriminals." In the typical life cycle of malware, amateurs create the first generation, to basically prove that it can be done. Later, the professional hackers typically enter the market, providing their devilish expertise. Fortunately for the mobile phone security software industry, this has not yet occurred in the world of cell phones.

For instance, the Redbrower is a Trojan horse that was created to illegally "earn" money on Java-activated cell phones. Redbrowser is advertised as a special Web browser that can provide instantaneous WAP (wireless application protocol) browsing. However, Redbrowser sends huge numbers of text messages to a first-class rate phone number located in Russia. This could add hundreds or even thousands of dollars to the victim's mobile phone bill. Luckily, mobile phone security software can now help to search and destroy such electronic bugs.

Additionally, spyware has expanded the scope of its influence from PCs, to mobile phones. Flexispy is a spying application that was created to record text messages, document calls and transmit recorded calls to a third party. Although it is officially legal, after Flexispy is installed, the user is not notified about the copious amount of information that is sent to a third party.

While cell phone viruses have infected thousands of phones in over 30 countries, the situation has not become an epidemic yet. Hopefully mobile phone security software will continue to wish cell phone viruses on their birthday: "Rest in peace!"

I have been having too much fun, so now is the time to get a little technical. The ironic thing is that today’s more technical comments are about technology that is meant to allow people to have a lot of fun on their mobile phones and waste tons of productive time just watching movies and TV from their phone. We have come full circle. Cell phones originally were developed to allow people to be more productive and now they will allow people to screw around anytime, anywhere. That is progress!

What Is EVDO?

EVDO is short for “Evolution, Data Only” although sometimes referred to as “Evolution, Data Optimized”. EVDO is a highly adaptive standard for wireless broadband that has been introduced to improve the performance of 3rd generation, 3G, mobile Internet access.

Wireless broadband has its obvious advantages over standard, hard wire broadband connections and the most pertinent of these advantages is the mobility of the broadband device. By using wireless Internet connections it has been possible to access the Internet using not only notepad computers but also cellular phones and other mobile devices.

The Advantages Of EVDO.

While mobile Internet access has progressed, the existing standards do have limitations. The bandwidth is limited and subsequently only comparatively small amounts of data can be transmitted to end-users without a loss of performance and quality. EVDO is unique in its approach to try and counteract this. Complex mathematical formulas are used in order to assign a unique signature to every mobile device. Once this device sends a signal requesting data transmission, the signature is applied to the signal and the altered message is sent. The receiver uses the inverse of the equation to convert the signal back again. EVDO also breaks data down into smaller packages of information and sends these packages separately. In essence this means that the bandwidth usage from any single device is cut down massively, allowing for many other users to gain high speed Internet access through any mobile device. It also means that in total less information needs to be sent. Without the use of EVDO, mobile devices struggle to gain the bandwidth they require in order to seamlessly log onto websites, especially if those sites have a lot of data to send. With EVDO this basically becomes a thing of the past and millions of people on their cell phones can access the same sites at the same time with little or no effect.

EVDO Performance.

EVDO can potentially produce a 2.4-megabit throughput. This is as powerful as a great many American DSL broadband connections found in people’s homes. Of course, because EVDO is truly wireless and portable it doesn’t matter where you are, you can access the Internet on your cell phone, your notepad or any mobile device without fear of poor quality.

The Existing Technology.

EVDO has been introduced to compete with existing wireless Internet technology called W-CDMA. However, W-CDMA requires a permanent path to be created between receiver and transmitter, unnecessarily using vast amounts of the available bandwidth. EVDO does not require this because it creates packages and sends the information in smaller parts. One of the big advantages of introducing EVDO, though, is that it uses exactly the same frequencies as existing methods, meaning there would be no structural change required to establish a usable network.

EVDO Service Providers In America.

Korea and America are leading the way in introducing EVDO to personal users and several services in the US are already operating several pricing and limit plans in order to allow users to easily access an effective Internet connection over their cell phone. Mobile 3-D Internet

All types of blogs, peer-2-peer audio and video communication via the Internet, e-commerce... all of these no longer amaze anybody. The controversy around Web 2.0 or even Web 3.0 only confirms that the IT community is on the verge of changing from one Internet model to another, but nobody knows what kind of model is coming. Existing technologies, no matter how effective they are, are based on 10-20 years old ideas. Blogs for example were nothing more than personal diaries with a simplistic design, read only by people close to the writer. The latest features, including all kind of data aggregators like folksonomy, mashup, and widgets, ability to find pictures and, as Google promised, video - based on real content, not on descriptive textual tags - and an Internet browser being the only required application to work with an online virtual operating system [1] and on-line applications, perhaps that is all what we can expect in the nearest future.

At the same time, the recognizable trend of the Internet in recent years is a growing prevalence of video content, which is closely associated with technical progress, such as increasing bandwidth and continuously reducing cost of data storage. Real-time video broadcasting via the Internet, as did audio broadcasting some times ago, becomes less and less surprising, while the number of people who are using this opportunity is growing. Further development combines home-theatre and Internet systems, allowing users to order any movie on-line and in the future quite possibly develop a story by themselves.

Such evolutions of communication systems have had a direct impact on mobile systems. Mobile phones, smart phones, notebooks and game gadgets stepping on the heels of each other, and trying to wrest a piece of their rivals' or related systems' functionality. Continuing this trend it is quite possible to say that in the future all these devices will merge into one gadget, if not for one "but". Mobile devices show a particularly evident contradiction between usefulness and device dimensions. In order to be easier to use, the mobile device should as small as possible. As a result we are looking at a screen in the best case the size of a playing card and typing by means of 12 keys. A mobile phone is small. In turn, the notebook has a much bigger screen and a keyboard with 101 keys which is helpful to type blindly, but does not fit to the pocket. Engineers are trying to find a compromise solution creating pull-down, movable, twistable and other types of screens and keyboards, but they are not so convenient to use. Such contradictions may be formulated in the tradition of TRIZ [2] – "the system should be large enough to be easy to use, and should be sufficiently small to be easy to carry". At the first glance, this conflict cannot be resolved. Immediately, it comes to mind a screen folded as a newspaper that is being unfolded is either hard to read or hard to use, for example, a keyboard unfolded to roll over the knees or even sewed to trousers (there is even such patent [3]!) Hopefully, it is still possible to resolve such a conflict taking into account that the user needs an image itself, not just a means. That might lead to a small device that is projecting such an image to glasses' lens, or even directly to pupil. In this case the "screen" will became as large as a field of vision. Unlike a virtual reality helmet, such device is incredibly small in size. Furthermore, such compact devices already exist and are even available for the commercial use [4].

The same is happening with the keyboard. Readers can formulate the contradiction for the keyboard themselves. Instead of seeking the compromise between size and usability, it is possible to offer a crucial solution to the problem, namely a virtual keyboard. The device, worn on the wrist, tracks the movement of the fingers and the on-screen display shows where the fingers are now and what key is pressed or released. There are several solutions for that, the simplest one in the form of gloves [5], the other defined by the movement of muscles [6], or using the reflection of laser or sound beams [7]. It is important that hands in the case of the virtual keyboard remain free. For that reason, the mobile computer with a large screen and the keyboard with any number of keys, localizations and layouts may have the same size as mobile phones now. (If necessary, the central processing unit may be on a belt, in a bag, or even in a home wirelessly connected.)

For what other reason, except existing diversity of applications, could this individual mobile computer be used? Perhaps for 3-D broadcasting. Indeed, if our glasses' "monitor" can project separate images for each eye, it skyrockets the Internet to a new, hitherto unattainable level. 3-D movies, news, sport events and concerts – the user will be able to see them as if he directly participated in the event. Changes in software and hardware to provide this will be significant – new video codecs, further increase of bandwidth to provide the quality, editing and playback software.

As is often the case, many ideas seem to be science fiction and no one expect them to appear in the next hundred years. In the case of mobile devices, systems have not only come as ideas but have been already translated into actual devices, though they are not a single system yet. Possibly, the negotiation between separate device vendors and steps towards collaboration would benefit users, and be a new impetus in the development of mobile devices and the Internet.
